A lifelong love of fabric has
brought me to the happy position of creating my own line of hats,
handbags and scarves. Mixing colour and textures to create a thing of beauty gives me
great pleasure. Being able to see the possibilities in a piece of fabric and
then embellishing it with an appropriate trim is a talent I seem to possess.
The highly embellished handbags
were my first creations. At the time, I was creating them simply for the
delight of seeing them finished. I had no plan for them, but felt compelled
to continue. A rewarding experience with a hat which I had sewn for a
costume, let me into the realm of specialty hats.
Each hat like the bags is
individual, and usually made partially from recycled materials. I cut up old
jeans, dresses, bedspreads, tableclothes, jackets and so on for the basic
hat body. The trims are old lace, braid, hand-made flowers, or silk flowers
bought by the bag from Goodwill or Value Village. A thrift store or the
remnant bin at a fabric store are my favourite places to shop.
A hat can make such a statement
when worn by a woman. Firstly, she is saying that she is not afraid to be
noticed because when a woman wears a hat SHE GETS NOTICED! Hats can create
an aura of sophistication or of fun! They can rescue a bad hair day, keep
the sun off, keep your head warm, or cover the hair loss caused by certain
medical treatments. Above all they are a treat to behold and a joy to wear!
